Harumi’s Story
Written by Miss Rebeca, 1st & 2nd grade teacher
This year, I am walking with a little girl named Harumi.
I remember when she first began coming to class. There were a few things that stood out right away. She often came with signs that she wasn’t receiving much personal care at home, her schoolwork took her longer than others, and she struggled with reading and spelling. As I spent more time with her, I began to understand why.
Her mom has some physical limitations and has had limited opportunities in her own education, which makes it difficult to support Harumi at home. Her dad is only able to visit occasionally—sometimes once a week, and other times even less. Harumi is growing up with very little consistent support.
I remember feeling a deep sadness as I began to see how much she is carrying on her own. This isn’t just about her education—it’s about a little girl who’s having to navigate life with very little help.
From that moment, I have been to praying for Harumi and her family. And trusting that God is able to work in the midst of their situation. I also reached out to her parents to start a conversation and invite them to work together for their daughter’s well-being. It has become a time of listening, understanding, and walking alongside them.
Little by little, we are beginning to see changes. Even in a short time, Harumi is starting to show more care in her personal appearance. She seems more prepared in the mornings and more willing to participate. She is also beginning to make progress in completing her assignments and showing greater effort in her learning. These are small steps, but I celebrate them with Harumi.
I can see that God is at work—bringing dignity, encouragement, and also felt safety.
Our Father is faithful to answer my prayer and bring His love and care to Harumi and her family. I invite you to pray with me for them.
Please pray for me, too, as I continue walking with them—pray for wisdom and discernment in how to love and lead them to Jesus.
